Graeme Souness told the Ed Chamberlin Audio Blog that the Premier League would "sorely miss" Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

Gerrard and Lampard will end more than 30 combined years of top-flight English football when they head to MLS sides LA Galaxy and New York City respectively in the summer.

And Souness, who made more than 350 appearances in the heart of Liverpool’s midfield during the '70s and '80s, believes England's top flight is losing two "greats".

“It’s going to be different in in the Premier League without these two,” Souness, speaking behind the scenes on Super Sunday, said.

“The league would have been a lot poorer without Gerrard and Lampard. They have been fantastic - both of them, in their own separate ways.

“They will be sorely missed by the neutrals, their own supporters and the guys they shared the dressing room with.”

Souness reckons the duo are among the greatest players of the Premier League era and admitted he would have loved to have pitted his wits against them.

“I would have loved to have played against them because I would have wanted to test myself against the very best,” he added.

“Newspapers write things and people on TV talk about the best players. If you’ve got anything about you, you'd want to compete against these two and see if you’re a match for them.

“These two are among the Premier League greats, they could have gone anywhere in the world and got in any team. They will be sorely missed.”
