Jose Bosingwa: Chelsea full-back says Champions League win over Bayern showed they are not too old
Jose Bosingwa believes Chelsea's UEFA Champions League final success was the perfect riposte to critics who had claimed the current squad was too old.
Prior to the start of the season, there were suggestions that Chelsea's old guard, including the likes of Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, would struggle to compete for major honours.
Former Andre Villas-Boas was also accused of trying to dispense with the club's senior figures too quickly in order to usher in a more youthful team.
However, after Villas-Boas was sacked in early March, interim manager Roberto Di Matteo relied upon the club stalwarts and was rewarded with FA Cup and Champions League glory.
The season was capped with the thrilling penalty shoot-out win over Bayern Munich last Saturday and Bosingwa was delighted with the outcome.
"They said the team was old, but we overcame all this," said the full-back in A Bola. "And it ended up being a very positive season."
Bosingwa also revealed that Villas-Boas had told the Chelsea squad they would win the Champions League after the 3-1 away defeat by Napoli in the first leg of the last 16.
The Portuguese said: "He told us we would be European champions."
Team-mate Raul Meireles added: "It was a funny thing. Following the Napoli defeat, he said we would be European champions.
"We never stopped believing and ended up winning the FA Cup and Champions League."
