UEFA's control and disciplinary body could opt to lengthen John Terry's ban when they meet next month after his dismissal against Barcelona.
The Chelsea captain was sent off for violent conduct at Camp Nou on Tuesday evening for kneeing Alexis Sanchez in the back and will now receive an automatic one-match ban.
Terry will miss the UEFA Champions League final on May 19th against Real Madrid or Bayern Munich but his ban could be extended to include games next season.
"The UEFA control and disciplinary body will decide on the suspension on 31 May 2012," read a UEFA statement.
Terry will not be the only Chelsea player to miss the game through suspension. He will be joined in the stand by Ramires, Raul Meireles and Branislav Ivanovic, who are also out after picking up bookings.
