Salomon Kalou was pleased to offer a reminder of his ability with the winning goal in Chelsea's victory over Benfica in Lisbon.

The Ivory Coast international scored the only goal of the game in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg when converting Fernando Torres' 75th minute cross.

It was a happy night for Kalou, who has started just three matches for Chelsea since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations in February.

And while the 26-year-old has respected the decisions of his managers, Andre Villas-Boas and now Roberto Di Matteo, he was delighted to score.

Kalou, who is out of contract at the end of the season and has yet to sign a new deal, told Sky Sports 2HD: "It's a good result, the away goal is very important.

"You want to play every game, but you have to respect the manager's decision.

"He gave me a chance tonight and I have to show it on the pitch, so I'm happy to get the goal.

"The most important thing is we are ahead and now we have to be ready for the next game at home."
