Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has confirmed the club have received an offer from a Premier League club for defender Alex.

QPR believed to be the source of bid for centre-back

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has confirmed the club have received an offer from a Premier League rival for defender Alex and has implied the bid must be increased. Sky Sports sources on Wednesday revealed new QPR boss Mark Hughes had set his sights on the Brazilian and the Loftus Road side are believed to be the origin of the bid. Alex wants to leave Chelsea and in December the centre-back had a transfer request accepted at Stamford Bridge. He does not feature in the plans of Villas-Boas, who hopes this week to complete the signing of Bolton's Gary Cahill, and Chelsea are now aiming to receive an acceptable offer. Chelsea's manager said on Thursday afternoon: "From what I know from my chief executive, there has been an approach from a Premier League club.

Offers

"We have respected Alex's transfer request so the market's open for him. "We're just trying to reach the level of proposal we think is good for the player. Nothing has happened up to now, but we'll listen to all offers. "We'll present anything to the player. He has to make a decision. He has generated interest from a lot of clubs." Alex had been connected with QPR earlier in January when Neil Warnock was still in charge, and it appears a move could still go ahead. QPR owner Tony Fernandes on Wednesday revealed he was ready to spend money in the transfer market and hoped to sign somebody before the weekend match against Newcastle. It seems that new arrival could now be Alex, who has proven his Premier League credentials at Chelsea since a loan spell with PSV Eindhoven came to an end in 2007.
