Liverpool have confirmed that Raul Meireles has submitted a written transfer request amid speculation of a move to Chelsea.
The Portuguese playmaker was known to be unhappy after the arrivals at Anfield of Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson pushed him to a substitute role.
As a result, Liverpool's Premier League rivals, Chelsea, were on Tuesday reported to have made a bid and it had been speculated he could be involved in a swap with Yossi Benayoun.
The latter is on the brink of a loan to Arsenal, which appears to rule out that scenario, but Meireles still wants out of Liverpool.
With half-an-hour remaining of the summer transfer window, the Reds said in a statement: "Liverpool football club have tonight confirmed that Raul Meireles has submitted a written transfer request."
The 28-year-old moved to England last season from Porto in an £11.5million move and has to date 32 Premier League starts.
Meireles has also scored five league goals for Liverpool, including the winner at Stamford Bridge in February.
