Andre Villas-Boas saw Chelsea beat Norwich 3-1 on Saturday, but also saw Didier Drogba carried off with a sickening head injury.
The Ivorian striker collided with Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy when challenging for a high ball and suffered a heavy landing as he tumbled back to the turf.
He required lengthy treatment on the field and was only carried off on a stretcher once he had been placed in a brace and given a breathing aid.
Concern was etched on the faces of those inside Stamford Bridge as Drogba made his exit, but Villas-Boas is hoping the injury may not be as serious as first feared.
He told
Sky Sports: "He is a little bit better and coming around. He is going for a full scan to assess the extent of the head injury and the concussion.
"He has made steady progress since he has fallen I have to complement my medical staff for being able to react straight away to a dangerous situation."
Consistent
Drogba was forced off with the scores locked at 1-1, with Grant Holt having cancelled out Jose Bosingwa's early opener.
The Blues were, however, able to edge themselves in front late on, with Frank Lampard netting from the spot and Juan Mata scoring on his debut.
On the performance from his side, Villas-Boas said: "It was hard work, particularly in the second half. I think the goal we suffered came against the running of the game because we were a little bit calmer at that stage, but we raised the tempo and the emotions of the game. I think we were able to respond well to suffering the goal.
"We played better in our overhaul, 90 minute performance because we only had two second halves against Stoke and West Brom when we were good. We were more consistent, so we are happy with that and fortunately enough we managed to turn the result in our favour."
Chelsea have splashed the cash during the summer transfer window and Villas-Boas has refused to rule out the possibility of bringing further fresh faces on board before Wednesday's deadline.
He said: "It will get pretty exciting in the last four days of the market, so let's see what happens. If something happens for us it is because we feel it, if it doesn't it is because we didn't feel it."
