Southend have signed Chelsea youngster Lee Sawyer on a three-month loan deal.
Shrimpers boss Steve Tilson has been forced into the transfer market after losing Nicky Bailey to Charlton last week.
Sawyer is yet to make a first-team appearance at his parent club, but has made the substitutes' bench on a number of occasions.
He is an England U19 international midfielder and has been at Stamford Bridge for the last 10 seasons.
He made seven appearances for the Blues' reserve side last year, while also playing a prominent role for the academy side which made it to the FA Youth Cup final.
However, a red card in the semi-finals of that competition denied him the opportunity to feature in the showpiece game against Manchester City.
