Chelsea midfielder Anthony Grant is poised to join Southend on a permanent basis.
The 21-year-old is expected to sign a two-year deal at Roots Hall after impressing during a loan spell with the Shrimpers last season.
"We've been talking to Granty and are expecting him to come in and sign for us," said boss Steve Tilson.
"We obviously had him with us on loan towards the end of last season, so we know what he's about and it's a good signing for us.
"He can play in a couple of positions as well, which helps when you only have a small squad like we do."
If Grant's deal is completed in time he could make his debut against Peterborough on Saturday.
