Robert Huth is still looking to join Middlesbrough despite the fact his £5 million from Chelsea collapsed this week.
The German failed a medical due to the ankle injury he sustained during the World Cup.
The full extent of the injury is not yet known, but it was obviously severe enough for Boro to call off the deal as it stood.
The Teessiders are now looking at other options and have made early moves for Manchester City captain Sylvain Distin.
However, Huth still sees his future at The Riverside Stadium and his representative claims a deal could be done sooner than expected.
"Robert still wants to go to Middlesbrough," said his agent Manfred Schulte.
"He was devastated when the deal was put on hold but he now hopes the problem will clear up and he can become a Middlesbrough player in the near future.
"At the present moment the transfer cannot happen but in the future it can.
"How long? It will be before the start of the season, I think the transfer may happen.
"We both hope it does, Robert would love to go to Middlesbrough."
While Boro also remain hopeful of signing Huth, they are plotting contingency plans - and one of those includes Distin.
The Frenchman has just one year left on his current contract at The City of Manchester Stadium and he is locked in talks with City.
Portsmouth have shown an interest, but now Boro are understood to have made firm enquiries and are considering a double bid for Distin and long-term target Joey Barton.
