Spain have called up Mariano Pernia to replace injured Chelsea star Asier Del Horno.
Having been granted permission by Fifa, Spain have called up Mariano Pernia to replace injured Chelsea star Asier Del Horno.
Del Horno injured the Achilles tendon in his left foot in a training session last week and subsequent tests showed he would need around three weeks to recover.
As a result, Spain boss Luis Aragones has decided to call in a replacement with Pernia getting the nod.
The Getafe star was put on stand-by at the weekend along with Deportivo La Coruna's Joan Capdevila, but Pernia's fabulous season for the Madrid minnows - in which he scored ten goals - has swayed Aragones.
The Argentine-born full back was tipped by many to make the squad at the first time of asking, but having only recently secured Spanish nationality was initially overlooked by Aragones.
Renowned for his thunderous long-range shooting, the 29-year-old will now get his wish of performing on the world stage for Spain.
