Chelsea cast eye over Casillas

Iker Casillas' failure to sign a new deal at Real Madrid is reported to have alerted Chelsea.

Chelsea are reported to be monitoring Iker Casillas with the goalkeeper still having failed to sign a contract extension at Real Madrid.

It was thought the 24-year-old was poised to ink a new deal after constructive talks with Real president Florentino Perez last month.

He met Perez for dinner and agent Gines Carvajal subsequently reported that he expected his client to put pen to paper within days.

However, over three weeks on, Casillas is still to receive an official offer from Real which has led to renewed speculation he could move on when his contract expires in the summer.

Carvajal insists the Spain international's priority remains to extend his stay at Real, but admits the continuing delay in reaching agreement is creating unwanted confusion.

"It was said that he would renew (his contract) in two days, and that he would be presented at a big ceremony," Carvajal stated.

"The only thing it has done is to make the whole situation seem a bit stranger and start a debate that we would prefer didn't exist.

"When the president (Florentino Perez) wants us to sit down and speak there is a 99 percent chance that he will renew.

"However, you always have to leave a small margin for what could happen."

That final statement has led some to speculate that Casillas could be tempted from Real and Premiership champions Chelsea are the latest side to be credited with an interest in the shot-stopper.

The Blues appear well-stocked in the goalkeeping department with both Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini on their books, but the chance to snare one of Europe's top performers on a free transfer could have alerted The Blues.

Manchester United have also been linked with Casillas, although it still seems almost certain he will ultimately sign on in Madrid in the coming weeks.
