Chelsea's Portuguese central defender Ricardo Carvalho has launched a withering attack on his manager Jose Mourinho after being left out of the Pensioners' team against Wigan last weekend.

Mourinho preferred the central defensive partnership of John Terry and William Gallas and the statistics certainly back this up.

The only goal that Chelsea have conceded with the Anglo-French defensive line in place was Manchester United's consolation strike in last season's League Cup semi-final. That is an incredible run of one goal conceded in 18 games, discounting the nominally friendly Community Shield.

When they were forced apart, such as when Gallas was played at left back after Wayne Bridge suffered his ankle injury, Chelsea's defence was less stout, and they conceded 33 goals in 31 games.

Carvalho may not like it, but it seems that Mourinho has once more made an astute managerial decision.
