Newcastle boss Graeme Souness has confirmed his interest in Scott Parker and Emre Belozoglu.

Souness is busy working on bringing new signings to the club for next season and has made Parker and Emre two of his top targets.

Parker is considering his future at Chelsea after failing to hold down a regular place in Jose Mourinho's side.

A number of clubs are tracking Parker including Everton, Liverpool, and Tottenham, but Souness remains hopeful of luring him to St James' Park.

"Scott Parker is a player we like very much and we are definitely interested in signing him," Souness told the Evening Chronicle.

"He is a player I have admired for a very long time and there is no question he will be an excellent signing for us.

"He is good on the ball and is one of the brightest young midfielders in The Premiership. He is a top player and is precisely the calibre of player Newcastle United are interested in signing.

"He had a fantastic game for Chelsea when they beat us in the Carling Cup at St James' Park last season, but that just confirmed what I already knew about him. I'd like him to sign for us.

"I don't know how far down the line things are. I just identify the players I want to sign and then it is up to the chairman to get the signatures sorted out. He is working very hard to make sure that happens, but we will have to wait and see.

"We're both working to bring a group of top players to Newcastle United and things are advancing. I can't say at the moment exactly who they will all be, but we have identified them and are trying to make sure they are playing for us next season."

Souness admitted the club had expressed an interest in Internazionale ace Emre, but denied suggestions they had made a bid for the Turkish international.

"Emre is a player we know and he is a player we like the look of," commented Souness.

"I don't know how it has been leaked out, but yes we've expressed an interest in him.

"But it is wrong to say that we have made a bid for him or that we have already held talks with him about a move to Newcastle."

Souness also revealed that he is a big fan of another United target - Daniel van Buyten.

The Belgian international had claimed he had held talks with Newcastle over a move from Hamburg, but Souness has rejected the claims and feels it would be difficult to prise him away from Hamburg.

"He is another player we are aware of and who I rate, but we have not held talks with him and I have not made him any promises at all," added Souness.

"Anyway, I don't think Hamburg are prepared to sell and I can understand why."
