Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu has conceded that his career at Stamford Bridge is over and has stated his desire for a return to Italy.

The troubled Romanian, who is awaiting his punishment for a failed drugs test, is still well regarded in Italy following successful spells at both Verona and Parma.

With his career in England having seemingly reached its conclusion, Mutu is now ready for a return to the country where he made his name.

''Even I find it hard to believe that I might have a future at Chelsea so, most probably, I will go back and play in Italy again,'' admitted Mutu.

''I'm almost certain Chelsea will not pay my contract during any suspension period I might get - but they will not sack me.

''In the meantime I will just have to wait for the decisions which the FA and my club will take.''

The outspoken forward is clearly not adverse to speaking his mind and continued to confess that he was close to a physical assault on Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

Even before Mutu's failed test the two had a distinctly frosty relationship, with the talented but temperamental striker now admitting he threatened his taskmaster.

''I have to admit that in the heat of our confrontation I did actually threaten Mourinho about what would happen if he ever went to Romania,'' continued Mutu.

''And in a moment of total madness I almost hit him, too.''
