The former Real Madrid star enjoyed a hugely successful season on loan at Boro last term, and the Teesside outfit worked tirelessly to try and bring him to the club permanently last summer.
However, they were unable to agree terms with Real over a transfer fee and Geremi subsequently completed a move to moneybags Chelsea.
Although he has shown glimpses of form at Stamford Bridge this campaign the 25-year-old has failed to cement a first-team berth, and press reports suggested that McClaren was preparing a bid for the African.
"Geremi had a tremendous season for us last year and was a fans' favourite during his loan spell," McClaren told the club's official website.
"As everyone knows, we tried to bring him here on a permanent basis last summer but it was not to be.
"If there was any opportunity that we could bring him back here we would be delighted but I don't know how it could happen because he's a big part of the set-up at Chelsea now.
"I read the press stories about that one with a smile on my face, but it's all just speculation."
