Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu says that billionaire owner Roman Abramovich gave the squad a piece of his mind following their home defeat to Arsenal.

The Gunners had just completed a league double over The Blues, along with knocking them out of the FA Cup at Highbury.

Romanian marksman Mutu says that Abramovich made an unusual appearance in the dressing room at Stamford bridge to voice his anger at the recent results.

"Roman came into the dressing room after the game to talk to us," Mutu was quoted as saying in the News of the World. "This is not usual.

"We'd just lost to Arsenal twice in a few days. They'd ended our chances in the cup and maybe the league as well.

"He looked around at all of us and told us straight: 'Arsenal are better than you'. He told us the title was gone.

"He was disappointed but for us, the players, it is very important he remain patient. It will not be good for him to be furious with us."

Mutu accepts that their title challenge is all but over - despite their rise to second place with a win at Manchester City, but explained that they never planned on winning the league immediately.

"If we had beaten them (Arsenal) last week, then maybe there would have been a small chance to stay in the championship. Now we must admit that it is the end.

"But it is important for everybody who loves Chelsea to understand our main target this season wasn't to win the title.

"Our target was to build a strong team for next season.

"If you want to make a super-team, you must first get in all the stars and then wait because it is an investment."

Meanwhile, Danish winger Jesper Gronkjaer is being eyed by German side Werder Bremen, and forgotten man Winston Bogarde could finally be set for a move away from the club with French side Lille.
