Chelsea midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron will miss a further three months of the season after undergoing back surgery.

Veron has not featured for The Blues since early November and has proved a costly purchase from Manchester United.

The Argentine international has made just 11 appearances for Claudio Ranieri's side since his £15 million switch to Stamford Bridge.

His last competitive outing was for his country in a 2006 World Cup qualifier against Colombia in mid-November.

The 28-year-old returned to his homeland earlier this month to visit a specialist in a bid to cure his nagging back problem.

Chelsea expressed their fears at the time that Veron may require an operation which could rule him out for the remainder of the campaign.

He has now undergone surgery and is expected to be sidelined for three months, meaning he will be struggling to be fit to play any further part in Chelsea's bid for the Premiership title.
