Veron has made just 11 appearances for The Blues since his £15 million move from Manchester United and has not featured for the club since the 5-0 thrashing of Newcastle in early November.
His last competitive outing was later that month for Argentina against Colombia in a 2006 World Cup qualifier.
He came back to Stamford Bridge with a back complaint which has so far not responded to any treatment.
The 28-year-old has now jetted back to his homeland to visit a specialist in an attempt to remedy the problem.
"Veron is going to Argentina to see a specialist who knows him from before and then we will know something more," said manager Claudio Ranieri.
"When he came back from Argentina last time he had a back injury and has tried to do everything without having an operation. Now he wants to go back to Argentina to see his own doctor."
Chelsea's interim chief executive Paul Smith confirmed the South American is expected to undergo an operation on his back problem and conceded he may not play again this season.
"We hope Juan will be fit enough to rejoin us before the season reaches its climax and strengthen our challenge for trophies," Smith told the club's official website.
"He has expressed a wish to undergo the surgery in Argentina as he is comfortable and familiar with the medical team, and the club fully supports this decision."
