Macca open to English move

MASSIMO MACCARONE has admitted that he has still not decided whether to sign for an English club or move to Italian giants Juventus.

The brilliant youngster has exploded on to the English consciousness with three superb performances against the nation`s sides.

For the Under-21s, the striker was the dominant figure in both a friendly and the European Championships against David Platt's youngsters - scoring a truly memorable double in the latter.

But Maccarone, hailed by the Italian press as the heir to Gianluca Vialli, also had a huge impact when he made his debut for the senior Italian side as they overcame England 2-1 at Elland Road.

The shaven-headed figure was felled in the area after being released by a brilliant Vincenzo Montella ball, to win the penalty that ultimately decided the game.

After sealing promotion to the top flight with his side Empoli, Maccarone has the world at his feet - and with Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri desperate to sign the player, along with the likes of Manchester City - the youngster will move to a major club.

"There is nothing definite yet," Maccarone admitted. "Obviously I am delighted with the attention being shown in me.

"But I can tell you I do not yet know my next destination.

"England or Juventus? We are considering every club and the options it will give me.

"Against England I have lived the beautiful moment, realised my greatest dream - to play in the Azzurri shirt of my nation.

"For the moment I want to enjoy promotion with Empoli - a club that has allowed me to grow and given so much to me.

"But then we will see. In the coming weeks I will make my decision.

"If it was entirely up to me? There are so many important teams that appeal to me. Some of those are Italian and some are English."

There is still a school of thought that moving away from Serie A sounds the death knell as far as international prospects.

However, it would cause outrage if Italy's current wonderkid was ignored for the Azzurri, and Maccarone is confident that his ability will make him one of the world's best.
