Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says he is hopeful summer signing Robin Van Persie can give his side the edge in the race for the title.

United face leaders Chelsea in a crucial Stamford Bridge clash on Sunday and, while the Blues are pleased with the way new boys such as Eden Hazard and Oscar have performed, Ferguson is equally thrilled by Van Persie's impact.

The Dutchman has already bagged eight goals and he also provided two assists during the victory over Stoke last weekend.

"Robin's performances are getting better all the time," said Ferguson.

"His cross last week for Wayne Rooney's goal was the kind a defender hates, whipped in between the last defender and the goalkeeper. It was brilliant.

"It is very difficult bedding new players in but no big club can afford to stand still.

"When we realised Van Persie was not going to sign for Arsenal we did our very best to get him to our club and he has made an impact immediately.

"Last week against Stoke, and on Tuesday against Braga, his movement was fantastic. I really was impressed with that, I thought it was really top, top stuff.

"Hopefully, it does make a difference. We bought him in for that reason - to make a difference."

Quartet give Ferguson options

Ferguson added that the addition of Van Persie gives him a wealth of options to choose from up front.

"We brought him in to give us maturity up front and also to give us the flexibility of different types of players," said the manager.

"With (Danny) Welbeck, Chicharito (Javier Hernandez), Van Persie and (Wayne) Rooney we have fantastic alternatives and that could make the difference, the four of them."
