Roy Hodgson has overlooked the United veteran despite the recent international retirement of John Terry.
The England boss even suggested to members of the general public on a London Underground train that the 33-year-old defender's international career is over.
Although Ferguson was unwilling to be dragged into that particular debate he is pleased that his player will now be focusing on life at Old Trafford rather than with the Three Lions.
Ferguson said: "I am not going into that but I am happy anyway because I think at his age he should be protecting himself as best he can.
"Hopefully by doing that he will be far more important to me than England."
Ferdinand has won 81 caps for England but has not represented his country since June 2011 and Stoke's Ryan Shawcross was included ahead of him in the squad for this month's World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland.
