Wayne Rooney: Hopes City were watching United's comeback at Chelsea

Wayne Rooney hopes Manchester United's stunning comeback at Chelsea will have injected some fear into Premier League title rivals Manchester City.

United came from three goals down to hold the Blues to a 3-3 draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, with Rooney netting two from the penalty spot.

Local rivals City currently lead the table but the striker feels the Red Devils' never-say-die spirit will have made a big impression.

Rooney said in the Daily Mirror: "It can have a psychological impact for sure. City will have been watching and probably went out at 3-0 thinking the game was over, but we would like to think they saw how we fought back.

"We showed how hard we work for each other and when we are like that we are very difficult to beat.

"Most teams would lie down at 3-0 but we fought well.

"I thought if we could get a goal with a little bit of time left then there is always a chance because we were still controlling the game. That's what happened. We are thankful for the point but still disappointed it wasn't three."

Key role

United goalkeeper David De Gea played a key role in salvaging a point in West London, denying Juan Mata and Gary Cahill with two important saves late on.

After attracting criticism for some less than stellar performances earlier in the season, Rooney feels the 21-year-old Spaniard is finding his feet.

He said: "David made some fantastic late saves at Chelsea.

"He is still a young lad and has a lot to learn. He has made some great saves here and I think he is going to be one of the best in the future."
