Rio Ferdinand: Manchester United defender could return to the starting line-up against Stoke

Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping Rio Ferdinand will be fit to feature in Manchester United's game against Stoke City on Tuesday.

Ferdinand sat out last weekend's Premier League win at Arsenal and was an unused substitute for Saturday's FA Cup defeat at arch-rivals Liverpool.

The experienced defender has been struggling with a back spasm and Ferguson did not want to gamble on the former England captain from the start at Anfield.

However, with Stoke heading to Old Trafford next week, Ferguson is optimistic that he will be able to call upon Ferdinand for the fixture.

"Rio only had one training session yesterday and we couldn't gamble with that," said Ferguson.

"He will train tomorrow and Monday. He could be right for Tuesday."

Wayne Rooney and Nani both missed the 2-1 defeat at Liverpool through injury and are unlikely to be involved against Stoke.

However, the attacking duo could return for the trip to Chelsea next weekend, with defender Phil Jones expected to be out a little longer.
