FIFA: Will not be suspending the Swiss FA, but is keeping a close eye on the situation

FIFA is satisfied with the Swiss Football Association's handling of Sion and has confirmed that it will not be taking any further action.

It had been suggested that world football's governing body would suspend the Swiss FA if it failed to impose suitable sanctions on Sion in the wake of their decision to field ineligible players.

Had a ban been imposed, Manchester United could have been handed a UEFA Champions League lifeline.

The Red Devils, who crashed out at the group stage, could have been reinstated in place of Basel.

Such an event will not be occurring, though, with FIFA happy with the Swiss FA's decision to dock Sion 36 points - three for each game in which they fielded one of their six illegally signed players.

Developments

A FIFA statement released on Friday read: "The FIFA emergency committee decided yesterday 5 January 2012 to consider the requirements established by the FIFA executive committee on 16 December 2011 as fulfilled by the Swiss Football Association (SFV) and that the SFV will consequently not be suspended in relation to the FIFA executive committee's decision of 16 December.

"However, FIFA has requested the SFV to keep the international football governing body informed on any future developments with regards to this matter."

With Sion currently in the process of appealing their sanction, FIFA accepts that the matter cannot be closed.
