Michael Carrick has urged Manchester United to shelve thoughts of their 2009 disappointment when they face Barcelona on Saturday night.

The last time Sir Alex Ferguson's men met Barca in the UEFA Champions League final they were on the receiving end of a 2-0 defeat, with the Catalan giants lifting the trophy in Rome.

But United midfielder Carrick insists that setback will have no bearing on Saturday's showdown at Wembley.

He said in the Daily Star: "It doesn't really matter about 2009 now. It's a different game and a one-off.

"We'll just play to our strengths and try to win the game.

"If we play well and do what we're good at, then we are a match for anyone. I think we've just gained experience."

Carrick insists United have learned from the mistakes they made in Rome ahead of the Wembley decider.

"We've watched back the video of the 2009 final. It wasn't a total disaster," he added.

"But there are things we want to put right and there are things we will put right. It's just getting it right on the night."
