Dario Gradi expects Crewe Alexandra to fail in bids to sign Fraizer Campbell and Nick Chadwick.
Manchester United youngster Campbell, and Plymouth Argyle's Chadwick, are targets for Crewe as the League One club look for a new striker.
With trialist Patrick Suffo failing to impress, technical director Gradi also revealed the club are likely to miss out on Campbell and Chadwick.
"We are asking Manchester United about Campbell, but they are reluctant to let him go out on loan again," Gradi told the club's official website.
"We have also enquired about Nick Chadwick, but were a bit unsure on his fitness and there would be a fee involved too.
"With someone like Chadwick, who did not play too many games last season, you have to be doubly sure.
"We will talk about Suffo, but by all accounts he did not do well enough to warrant a contract here."
Plymouth boss Ian Holloway has warned Gradi that he would be wasting his time in pressing ahead with a bid for Chadwick.
Holloway said: "Dario did speak to (assistant manager) Tim Breacker to ask if I had any players I might want to loan out.
"Tim told him to speak to me, but I have waited for Dario to call and he hasn't. So for Chadwick's name to now be put forward is a tad premature.
"I have worked hard to get a decent squad together and the last thing I'm going to do is throw them away or whatever."
