Tottenham kicked off their pre-season tour of South Africa with victory over Kaizer Chiefs.

Spurs claimed a 2-1 success at the ABSA Stadium with goals from Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane.

The Irish star put Spurs ahead just four minutes before the break when he was played through by Ricardo Rocha and he lobbed Emile Baron in the Kaizer's goal.

The home side did not take long to level as they scored just five minutes into the second half. The goal was down to Onismor Bhasera as he won the ball on the left before crossing and Shaun Bartlett was there to head home.

Spurs were not to be denied, though, and Berbatov was on hand to side-foot home the winner, after good work from new-boy Darren Bent.

A young Spurs side also won, as they claimed a 4-2 triumph at Staines.

Manchester City maintained their 100 per cent pre-season record with a 4-0 win against Carlstad in Sweden.

New front-man Rolando Bianchi helped himself to another two goals, after opening his City account against Orgryte earlier in the week.

City's other goals came from Bernado Corradi and Marc Laird.

There was drama at Turf Moor as Burnley held Middlesbrough to a 1-1 draw, with a fire threatening the game halfway through the second half.

The media were forced to evacuate the otherwise empty stand as fire engines were called to contain the emergency. The problem was resolved, whilst the game continued.

On the pitch Burnley had taken the lead through Andy Gray on the stroke of half-time, but Boro secured a draw as substitute James Morrison rounded Gabor Kiraly to level matters.

Newcastle needed an injury-time equaliser from Nobby Solano to salvage a draw at Carlisle United.

The League One side performed admirably and took the lead when Danny Livesey capitalised on some slack defending to head home.

Then a momentary lapse at the back from Carlisle allowed Solano in to level with a neat lob over Kieran Westwood to level.

A poor performance from Sunderland saw them lose 1-0 to Championship new-boys Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park.

The only goal of the game came after just two minutes when Martin Paterson poked home past Darren Ward.

A young Liverpool side played out a goalless draw against Peterborough in Mark Tyler's testimonial at London Road.

A Manchester United reserve team drew 1-1 at Fleetwood Town.
