Alan Smith has reminded Sir Alex Ferguson of his goalscoring capabilities having netted as Manchester United beat Manchester City in a 'mini' reserve team derby.
The England international had not previously scored since returning from the horrific leg injury he sustained last season against Liverpool.
United won Thursday's clash at Ewen Fields 2-0, with Smith's effort a fine instinctive chip from 30 yards after Joe Hart's miscued clearance landed at his feet.
Another boost for Ferguson was the return of midfielder Park Ji-sung, after a three-month absence following surgery on his ankle.
The South Korean international completed the first 45 minutes of a contest that also saw fellow first teamer Kieran Richardson get on the scoresheet with a fine free-kick.
