Cardiff have been granted permission to talk to Manchester United striker Alan Smith about a possible loan move to Ninian Park.
The Bluebirds made the shock approach earlier this week and United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is willing to let him leave.
Smith has struggled to hold down a place in United's first team this season after recovering from the broken ankle he sustained last term.
Ferguson is thought to be keen to loan out Smith so that he can get some valuable match action under his belt.
A spokesman for Cardiff said: "We have made an inquiry to Manchester United.
"Sir Alex Ferguson has granted the loan. It is now down to the player."
It now remains to be seen if the former Leeds star will be willing to take the step down to The Championship to join Cardiff.
The player's agent Alex Black had indicated to skysports.com that Smith was determined to fight for his place at Old Trafford.
