Dutch coach Marco van Basten is hopeful of persuading veteran keeper Edwin van der Sar to continue his international career.
There could well be a changing of the guard in Holland, as Philip Cocu has called time on his international career following their World Cup exit and van der Sar is currently mulling over his future.
PSV Eindhoven star Cocu won 101 caps, his last being the defeat to Portugal, while Manchester United star van der Sar has 113 appearances under his belt.
"Philip told us that it was enough at the age of 36," said van Basten. "Edwin has his doubts but we hope he will continue as he is not only a fantastic keeper but also a good captain."
The core of the Dutch camp is relatively young and van Basten believes they will come good in the years ahead - provided he finds a midfield enforcer.
"Our main target was to make progression with a young squad and that worked out," said van Basten.
"We did not dominate matches like we wanted but that also has to do with the strength of our opponents.
"If you see the teams still in the tournament it is clear we missed physical power in our midfield."
