Barnsley boss Andy Ritchie has launched an audacious attempt to sign former Manchester United starlet Eddie Johnson for the coming season.
The 21-year-old spent time on loan at relegated Championship side Crewe Alexandra last season, netting five times in 23 appearances for the Gresty Road outfit.
Alex boss Dario Gradi had been hoping to sign the youngster, but it now seems Ritchie will use The Tykes' Championship status to tempt Johnson into unknown territory.
"We will be sitting down this week for talks with Eddie's agent," Ritchie told the club's website.
"They are only going to be preliminary discussions so we will have to wait and see what happens."
The Chester-born forward was a product of The Red Devils's youth system, but only made one appearance for the Lancashire club against Leeds United in the League Cup in October 2003.
Meanwhile, Crewe have signed their seventh Gresty Road youngster to a professional contract.
Wales Under-19 international goalkeeper Owain fon Williams has signed a two-year contract with The Railwaymen.
