Duo missed out on Italian starlet

Chelsea and Manchester United missed out on the capture of Salvatore Foti.

Premiership giants Chelsea and Manchester United have missed out on the capture of Italy Under-17 starlet Salvatore Foti.

The pair had been monitoring the youngster for some time, but the promising striker opted to stay in Italy with Sampdoria after leaving Acireale.

The 17-year-old has already made an impact at Sampdoria after netting in their recent Coppa Italia clash against Udinese.

Acireale have now confirmed the two English titans were keeping close tabs on Foti before he signed for the Stadio Luigi Ferraris outfit.

"Sampdoria have beaten off competition from Chelsea and Manchester United so it's a credit to us," said Acireale's youth coach Santo Palma.

Acireale have another talented youngster on their books in the shape of 15-year-old Daniele Bontempo, who is being tipped for a big future in Italian football.
