Barnsley boss Andy Ritchie has revealed his failure in trying to land a striker on loan this week.

The Oakwell manager was keen to add a hit-man before Thursday's Football League loan deadline, having spoken with clubs in The Premiership and The Championship, but with no success.

"We were left looking at younger ones but again the big teams would not let out the quality of player we wanted," Ritchie told the club's official website.

"If we were to go for a youngster, then we wanted someone with the right quality, so it would not be a gamble.

"We asked Manchester City about Ishmael Miller, but they did not think it was the right time to let him out.

"We spoke to Manchester United about Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Giuseppe Rossi, but Sir Alex Ferguson does not want them to go out yet and we know Newcastle will not let Michael Chopra out on loan."
