Alan Smith has confirmed that he is ready to take on a midfield role next season.
Sir Alex Ferguson revealed earlier this week that he was keen on trying Smith in a holding midfield role and could even see him as a long-term replacement for skipper Roy Keane.
Smith starred in a pre-season friendly at Peterborough United and now he is set to take on more of a deeper role, as opposed to his usual forward one - despite the fact it could hamper his World Cup aspirations.
"Everybody has to realise Alan Smith getting to the World Cup comes second to Manchester United trying to win The Premiership," he said.
"The manager feels I can play in that position and it is something I enjoy because I am always involved in the game.
"As a centre-forward, sometimes you can get quite isolated and frustrated but sometimes I do have to remind myself to get back when an attack breaks down. And if I forget, I can usually rely on Rio Ferdinand to remind me."
