AZ players in demand

A clutch of clubs from around Europe watched AZ Alkmaar on Wednesday.

A clutch of clubs from around Europe were represented at AZ Alkmaar's Uefa Cup clash with Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.

Arsenal, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Real Madrid, Milan and Monaco all posted scouts at the game, with talented full back Jan Kromkamp believed to be the object of desire for most of the teams.

Joris Mathijsen and Denny Landzaat have also had impressive seasons for AZ this term and the Dutch title challengers could see their squad targeted in the summer.

AZ chairman Dirk Scheringa is aware that his players are being watched and has admitted he will not stand in the way of them climbing the ladder.

"We are trying to get our team together," Scheringa told Noord Hollands. "But of course we haven't to forget the sporting ambitions of a player. Of course we will think about that."

Kromkamp was linked with a move to Valencia in January and the signs are suggesting he will head out of Alkmaar in the summer, and AZ could secure a sizeable fee for his services if the interested parties enter the bidding.
