Philippe Mexes has insisted that he had no offer from Manchester United when he controversially completed his switch to Roma from Auxerre.
Auxerre are still furious that Mexes agreed a new deal with the club but then left for Roma - with the French side still chasing legal action against the player and his agent.
One of the French club's complaints appears to hinge around the wealth of interest from around Europe in the young France international - including Premiership side Manchester United, who has been credited with longstanding interest.
However, Mexes is adamant he plumped for the only genuine offer, insisting that coach Guy Roux had told him he could leave.
"I didn't have thousands of propositions, contrary to what I could hear," said Mexes.
"There was only one, from Roma.
"I had two years remaining on my contract but I got Guy Roux's word that I was free.
"Roux stated that I still had my locker, my shirt and my number five but it was not true.
"It was only for his conscience that he wanted to give out that message."
Roux was quick to respond to Mexes' latest claims - and it appears that he remains bitter about the incident.
"He betrayed us," insisted the coach.
"Mexes and his agent accepted a big cheque to prolong his stay at Auxerre, but then left directly for Roma.
"He told us only the next day.
"AJA were deceived and sanctions will come for Philippe, his agent and AS Roma."
