Blackburn Rovers boss Mark Hughes has refused to rule himself out of the race for defenders Wes Brown or Danny Gabbidon.

Hughes has had a tough start at Ewood Park since taking charge and he is already understood to be looking at potential targets for January, when the transfer window opens.

Defence seems to be a priority and Hughes is being tipped to move for Cardiff City star Gabbidon and Manchester United man Brown.

Hughes knows Gabbidon well from his time as Wales boss, while he will also be well informed about United stopper Brown - who has rejected a new deal at Old Trafford and looks increasingly likely to move on.

While Gabbidon would seem to be to be a straightforward target for Hughes - with his close relationship to the former West Brom centre half likely to play a major bearing on any potential deal - Brown's situation appears more complicated with strong competition likely to come from the likes of Everton, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Bolton and Liverpool.

However, Hughes insists he would be interested in any 'good player' that came on to the market.

"There's a lot of speculation about a lot of players at the moment. I think it's just that time of the year," said Hughes.

"But, obviously, I'm interested in good players if they become available."
