Roy Carroll has revealed that he will have to force his way back into Sir Alex Ferguson's plans at Manchester United if he is to claim the number one jersey for his country.

The keeper was given the chance to shine by Northern Ireland boss Lawrie Sanchez on Wednesday evening and he did not disappoint, as he made a string of fine saves in the 0-0 draw with Switzerland.

Although Carroll performed with credit, Sanchez is likely to restore Maik Taylor to the team for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Carroll is aware his international chances will suffer if he does not move above Tim Howard and Ricardo in the Old Trafford pecking order.

"You want to play and be number one but sometimes it doesn't happen like that," he commented.

"So the first thing I have to do is to get my spot back at United, then prove I'm good enough to play for my country."
