Silvestre targeting second spot

Mikael Silvestre wants Manchester United to push for second place in The Premiership to help ease the pain of losing the title.

The reigning champions look likely to surrender their crown in the near future with Arsenal on the verge of clinching championship glory.

The Red Devils are now locked in a battle for second spot with Chelsea and have the chance to close the gap to a single point if they beat Charlton on Tuesday night.

Now the Frenchman is targeting second and believes that it would still be a good campaign, taking into account they are also through to the FA Cup final.

"If we got second, it would mean we had not done so badly this season," the defender told MUTV.

"We are a long way from Arsenal at the moment because the level of our performances is not what we wanted to be.

"You need consistency to win the championship - that's why we are third."

Chelsea have opened the door to Manchester United after picking up only two points in their last three matches and Silvestre knows it is now vital they beat The Addicks to keep up the pressure on Claudio Ranieri's side.

"Chelsea have given us the chance to get closer to them and we need to take it," he stated.

"If we win against Charlton we would only be a point behind them which would give us a massive lift, particularly with Liverpool coming up on Saturday."
