Tim Howard has revealed that he is steadily starting to overcome the nervousness that plagued him at the start of his Manchester United career.

The American keeper has claimed that he was so nervous before certain games that he was sat shaking in the dressing room.

Howard has revealed that his seemingly ice-cool persona is an act, claiming he has to combat bouts of nerves before each game.

"I really do feel pressure but I think the goalkeeper in me tells me just to try to make it look good," he declared.

"But it's all a facade. There have been times when I've been so nervous but I just try not to let it show.

"There have been games this season where I've felt really anxious and literally been shaking beforehand. Arsenal was one, the two pre-season games in America went that way, and Rangers at Ibrox was really intense.

"I still get nervous but I'm starting to settle into a groove. But I still get anxious, as I think every player does."

Howard's arrival from MLS shocked many in England but his imposing performances have won over the doubters.

However, the keeper still cannot understand why Sir Alex Ferguson opted to pin his faith in a relatively unknown American.

"United could have bought any goalkeeper in the world and they bought me," said Howard. "It just doesn't make sense.

"You could analyse it all you want but in the end it just doesn't make sense. I'd go crazy if I tried to figure out how I got here or why I got here because to me it's totally unbelievable."
