Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel believes Tim Howard can become one of the club's all-time great custodians.

The big Dane thinks the US international has been a superb find for The Red Devils this season, having signed as a bit of an unknown from New York/New Jersey MetroStars in the summer.

The United legend has been impressed by Howard's performances this season, with the American having notched 13 clean sheets so far, and thinks he can succeed where other keepers have failed to shine since his departure from Old Trafford in 1999.

"When I came, United hadn't won championships and weren't in the Champions League, while most of the players were older than I was," said Schmeichel.

"It's different for Tim because the team is expected to win the championship and is expected to, at minimum, reach the semi-finals, if not the final, of the Champions League.

"The number of keepers that have come after me just shows the kind of pressure there is in that position.

"But Tim has ability and a confidence that could help him succeed.

"It's only been half a season and I know what it's like to have people put all these expectations on you just because you start well.

"I'd like to see him do that forever, but I'd like to see some consistency over time. That is really going to win fans over, consistency.

"That is where trust is built and if Tim could maintain that over time, there is no telling how long he could be here."
