Van Buyten stays

DANIEL VAN BUYTEN has ended speculation about his future by revealing he has extended his contract with Marseille.

The giant Belgian defender had sparked a surge of transfer talk when taking the unusual step of organising a press conference this week.

When the briefing was postponed for 24 hours, rumours were rife that the centre back would be revealing he is moving to England, with Manchester United and Newcastle United both known admirers of his talents.

However, he was instead confirming his commitment to the cause at Stade Velodrome.

"I am very, very happy to remain at Marseille," he declared at the press conference.

L'OM have extended van Buyten's contract until 2007, and their interest in Barcelona's Philippe Christanval could cool as a result.

The French stopper's wage demands are hindering the Provence club's bid to sign him, and Bolton Wanderers could be alerted if talks break down.
