MANCHESTER UNITED teenager John Rankin is hoping he can earn a contract with Aberdeen.

The Scottish midfielder has linked up with The Dons on trial after being told he has no future at Old Trafford.

Rankin was on trial at the Dons' SPL rivals Dunfermline Athletic last week and has now headed to Pittodrie in search of a contract.

The 19-year-old's Red Devils deal expires in the summer and he wants to kickstart his professional career at Pittodrie.

"Alex Ferguson told me before Christmas that it's very difficult to break into the Manchester United first team and he couldn't see me doing that," conceded Rankin.

"He said he'd let me go to try to further my career elsewhere. I'd love something permanent to happen with Aberdeen but it is early days."
