LAZIO are determined to break the bank to sign Rivaldo as they look to use Barcelona's interest in Gaizka Mendieta to help broker a deal.

The Roman club, despite reports of mounting debts, are still prepared to embark on a spectacular spending spree which would involve the Brazilian superstar and possibly former midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron.

Mendieta is no longer wanted at Stadio Olimpico but rumours of a move to Chelsea have been denied, aiding Barcelona's fight to bring him to Camp Nou.

"We are in contact with Barcelona virtually every day," Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti revealed.

"They want Mendieta and we want Rivaldo.

"What we are waiting for is to hear what the players think about this transfer.

"Barcelona are talking to Rivaldo to see if he would accept a move, and then we will have to talk to him to judge what kind of ambition he has to play for us."

Cragnotti was speaking at a press conference at Formello, where the biancoceleste unveiled Juan Pablo Sorin and Massimo Oddo as their two close season captures this far.

Sorin is still being linked with a move to Manchester United, even though he has yet to play a game for his new club, with the prospect of his fellow Argentinian Veron moving in exchange still being mooted.

"I think we are well covered on the wings," stated coach Roberto Mancini.

"We have, for now, Sorin and Mendieta.

"But we will see what happens in the next few days."

Whether that comment suggest the players could be on the move is open to debate, but it is a fair bet to assert that the two arrivals will not be the end of the summer transfers at Lazio.
