Lazio plot Ljungberg bid

LAZIO'S Massimo Cragnotti is heading for London this week, prompting intense speculation surrounding the Roman outfit.

Arsenal's Freddie Ljungberg is one of the names on the club's hit-list, although the fact that they are behind with their payments to Manchester United for Jaap Stam may bring into question where the funds will arrive from.

Nevertheless, Cragnotti has told reporters: "I will build a great team," and Alessandro Nesta looks set to stay at Stadio Olimpico despite being coveted by a number of top sides.

Instead, Argentinian hit-man Hernan Crespo is likely to be sacrificed in order to raise cash, with Manchester United believed to be chasing Juan Sebastian Veron's close friend.

If a buyer can be found for one of the favourites to land this summer's Golden Boot in the World Cup, then Lazio will continue their relentless pursuit of new blood.

Leeds midfielder Olivier Dacourt and Mark van Bommel of PSV Eindhoven are confirmed targets, but spiky Arsenal ace Ljungberg is also a target for the biancoceleste club.

Some sterling work in the Champions League has already alerted Juventus to his capabilities, and Lazio have reportedly already made contact with Highbury managing director Keith Edelman in a bid to discover a valuation of the Swedish international.

The Gunners want to keep their 25-year-old star, but there will be attempts from Italy to lure him to Serie A in the summer.

Meanwhile, Dejan Stankovic is attracting interest from the North Londoners and Chelsea, but the midfielder is viewed as an important part of Lazio's plans for 2002/2003.
