MILLWALL midfielder Steven Reid has been handed his debut for the Republic of Ireland for Wednesday's friendly with Croatia at Lansdowne Road.

Ireland boss Mick McCarthy feels Reid, who scored in Millwall's 4-0 win over Norwich last weekend, deserves his chance for the senior team after impressing for the Under-21s.

"Steven Reid deserves this chance," said McCarthy. "The lad has the ability to make an immediate impression although it is a huge step from the First Division to international level."

Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison will have to wait for his chance as he not been named in the starting line-up as was widely expected, but he should get his opportunity to make his debut from the bench.

Aston Villa defender Steve Staunton will win a record 90th cap and he will partner Richard Dunne in the centre of the Irish defence as McCarthy builds for the crucial World Cup qualifier against Holland next month.

Ireland captain Roy Keane is joined in midfield by Lee Carsley in the absence of Mark Kinsella, and Matt Holland.

In-form Leeds United striker Robbie Keane will lead the attack with Blackburn Rovers ace Damien Duff expected to support him in attack.
