MANCHESTER UNITED have confirmed the signing of Roy Carroll from Wigan Athletic.

The highly-rated 23-year-old shot-stopper has signed four-year deal at Old Trafford and will compete with Raimond van der Gouw, for the number two spot at Old Trafford behind first choice Fabien Barthez.

The Northern Ireland international, who saw proposed moves to Leicester City and Everton fall through, admitted earlier this week that he could not turn down the opportunity to play for United.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been keen to strengthen his goalkeeping options with only veteran van der Gouw as cover for Bartez and he wanted a long-term orption.

Ferguson admitted he was delighted to have signed the former Hull City ace.

"We are delighted to sign Roy as he is one of the most promising goalkeepers in Britain," Ferguson told the club's official website.

"He will play in a number of games for us and will have the opportunity to learn under the best in the world, Fabien Barthez."

Carroll becomes the third new arrival at Old Trafford this summer following the signings of Ruud van Nistelrooy and Juan Sebastian Veron.
