ASTON VILLA defender Gareth Barry is a surprise inclusion in the England Under-21 squad for the game against Spain on February 27.

The highly-rated 20-year-old has been involved in the full squad for the past ten months, but he has not been included in Sven Goran Eriksson's first party.

Newcastle's teenage striker Shola Ameobi has been rewarded for his recent impressive form for The Magpies as Alan Shearer's deputy with his first call-up.

Ameobi is also eligible for his native country Nigeria and his inclusion is an indication that England want him to commit his future to them.

Other new caps in the squad include Tottenham's highly-rated defender Alton Thelwell, and Manchester United midfielder Mark Wilson, who has yet to make a first-team start at Old Trafford.

Leeds duo Alan Smith and Paul Robinson, who were in the full squad against Italy in November, are also named in the Under-21 squad by coach Howard Wilkinson.

Derby County defender Seth Johnson, who made his senior debut in Turin, is also included in the squad despite having only recovered from a knee injury which has kept him out of action since New Years Day.
