PORTSMOUTH are said to be on the trail of two Manchester United youngsters - and Michael Clegg and Jonathan Greening are rumoured to be the targets.

Tony Pulis, who is looking to bring additions to Fratton Park to help the South Coast outfit stave off relegation to the Second Division, watched the United reserves beat Newcastle at Old Trafford 3-0 last week.

Pulis refused to divulge the identity of the players he desires but admitted "they are on the fringes but look like the type of players this football club needs."

Full back Clegg, 22, has had few chances in the first team at Old Trafford, while the 21-year-old winger Greening, who joined United from York for £500,000 in 1998, has been linked with a move to Tottenham, Bolton and Sheffield Wednesday.

Pulis was appointed manager at Portsmouth four weeks ago and has been promised financial backing from chairman Milan Mandaric, but so far his only signing has been the £150,000 capture of Ceri Hughes from Wimbledon.
